Excerpt:

“We have to keep moving.” Aaron tugged on my arm, but my feet stalled as I took in the carnage beside them, unable to look away.

“How hard did you hit him?”

“It,” Aaron spat. “Not him. It’s not a person anymore.”

A gaping hole was carved into one side of his head, clouding the air with a putrid stench. His skin was pale and brittle like parchment, roughened like sandpaper along his arms and hands. Hair grew in straggly, unkempt patches from his head and jaw, scruffs carrying all the way down his neck to the collar of his shirt. Torn along the bottom so that the hem dangled over his filthy blue jeans and the left sleeve in tatters, it sported the logo for some band I’d never heard of. One he must have known. And liked. Because he had been human once. A normal person who liked normal things. A man who worked hard. A man who loved his wife and children. A man who would never . . .

I swallowed hard around the lump in my throat.

It was hard to believe that all it took was one glance at an infected screen to turn him into this. Something in the series of ones and zeros that attacked the human cortex, allowing the virus to move right in and take control of the host. Turning him—and all the others—into nothing more than mindless cyborgs with one programmed goal.

To kill.

No more memory. No more conscience. No more humanity. It was just as the A.N.T.s had feared all along. No one knew where Plague 2.0 originated, but once it was out there in cyberspace it went viral. Computers worldwide were infected, and then it made the jump to cell phones, tablets, televisions . . . anything with a screen and internet access. The most effective dispersal mechanism on the planet.

“You ready?” Aaron asked.

I brushed cold tears from my cheeks and nodded. What other choice did I have?
